During the Spanish Reconquest, when Sancho III was king of Castile, the citadel of Calatrava was sieged by the Muslims. A group of Cistercian monks volunteered to defend that stronghold and therefore, King Sancho III gave them the privilege of founding an order of knighthood with the name of that forteress. In 1164, Pope Alexander III approved the stablishment of that Order.
